In early May of 1915, Avis Hotchkiss and her daughter Effie departed from Brooklyn on a three speed Harley Davidson with a sidecar. Their goal was to cross the United States entirely, and return to New York, all on a motorcycle. It took them a while, as they were in no particular hurry, and weren't trying to set any records. In fact, they had no thought of making history at all.
But when they reached the Pacific Ocean in August of that same year, they had become the first women to travel across the length of the United States on a motorcycle. They then rode back to New York City to find that they had become minor celebrities. So, while you may be seeing more women on Harley Davidsons these days, the phenomenon is nothing new.
