The Harley Davidson company began in 1903 in Milwaukee. Their first real production bike didn't emerge until 1906, and it had less than five horsepower, but it was a huge hit in America. At the time, cars were still quite rare, and only for the rich. Everyone else rode horses, bicycles, or walked. When an inexpensive motorized "bicycle" that went 40 miles an hour hit the market, people wanted one. By the early 1920s, Harley Davidson was so successful that there was only one other motorcycle company left in America, from the sixty-five who existed in 1903.
